Optics Engineer



DEPARTMENT:           Research and Development, Engineering


Educational Background:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Optical Engineering or related technical discipline; or 3+ years optical engineering design experience;


  • 3+ years in optical engineering design, construction, and maintenance
  • 3+ years in flow cytometry or other biology imaging/microscopy related fields highly preferred

Other Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of optical theory to confidently develop, troubleshoot, and refine optical designs;
  • Experience in microscopy of biological samples, fluorescent imaging, and/or light scattering microscopy preferred;
  • Extensive hands-on experience in the design, construction, and maintenance of optical workbenches with laser sources;
  • Experience with Zemax;
  • Experience with SolidWorks and/or LabVIEW a plus;
  • Strong data acquisition and statistics skills as well as excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills;
  • Ability to self-organize and work with minimal supervision;
  • Experience in designing for scalability, reliability and performance;
  • Experience in utilizing design patterns and industry best practices in optical engineering design;
  • Thorough understanding of the physics of optical systems and the skills necessary to analyze system performance;
  • Ability to evaluate optical performance and methodically work through a process that finds offending components;
  • Excellent written and oral skills;



  • Work with research and development team to develop optical systems for flow cytometry, cell sorting, and microfluidic applications;
  • Assist in the development of cell sorting machines;
  • Establish policies, procedures, specifications for optical systems;
  • Use advanced engineering techniques, theory and practices in the optical engineering development lifecycle;


  • Participate in the activities and timelines of the research and development teams for the entire development life cycle, including design, specifications, functional testing and troubleshooting;
  • Perform multiple optical engineering development projects, ensuring appropriate procedures, processes, tools, test, and release activities;
  • Serve as technical expert for the optical engineering design development life cycle;
  • Carry out complex assignments requiring development of new or improved optical engineering techniques or procedures;
  • Troubleshoot and debug optical engineering design, implementation and integration;
  • Conduct design reviews and release of optical fixtures and assemblies;
  • Write optical engineering specifications and test plans;
  • Review and approve optical engineering documents and documentation;
  • Provide verification/validation support;
  • Interact regularly with management and team members to communicate status of milestones and impact of technical hurdles;
